Plan for what comes after your apprenticeship as soon as you can. Nobody will hand you the answer, and the people who plan ahead have far better choices.

• Many people drift on autopilot and then take whatever role is left at the end.
• Watch what happens to the apprentices and graduates ahead of you; it's early warning of what's coming.
• Talk to HR, your network and recruiters (perhaps from year three) about what's possible.
• Imagine that you won't have a job after the programme, and ask what you'd do.
• Ask a mentor for the opposite of your plan, just to challenge your thinking.
• Once you know what you want, work backwards: who do you need to know and what do you need to do?
